First, let me say that I was a Forensic Crime Scene Investigator, so not much unsettles me anymore. But I live somewhat in the country and this book seriously had me jumping at every sound once the night drew in!I haven't been this on-edge since reading The Exorcist!I loved the way A.G. Mock told the story through two running storylines—one that follows the kids in the 70s, the other which follows the same cast as adults in the 90s. Both are full of nostalgia, and the kids' story was sweet and made me smile and cry and even laugh out loud. (If you liked the coming-of-age movie Stand By Me, you'll love The Little Woods.)And I'm not ashamed to admit that it made me tense and nervous and more frightened than I thought it would.The Little Woods is gothic and dark, and will have you wondering if demons could actually be among us. I'd never heard of the Book of Enoch, and the author does an amazing job of entwining this ancient apocryphal text with the biblical Book of Revelations, to terrifying effect.AND THAT ENDING!!!You won't see it coming, and it's the perfect segway to the second book in the series, called The Watchers. The author includes the first chapter of it for free at the end of this book, and it seems to pick up the story in 2013. I loved who the main character is and what they're up to (no spoilers here - - you'll have to read it for yourself!)MY SUMMARY: If Stand By Me and Stephen King's IT had a demonic baby together, it wouldn't be as scary as The Little Woods!Defintiely a 5-star read. Highly recommend. I love a good scary book but they're so hard to find. So many times they're either too far-fetched, too gross (and not at all suspenseful) or just don't present characters that I care about.But 'The Little Woods' fulfilled all of that for me. I fell in love with the characters (Della is my fave!) and was on edge throughout most of the book as the truth about what happened to the kids in the woods came to light and what it means for the adult characters.I couldn't put it down and ended up reading the 400 pages in just over a day! It's smartly written, dark, creepy and sweetly sentimental. Basically everything that makes a good book GREAT!If you like any of the books in my headline (well, 'Stand By Me' was a movie, but it was based on Stephen King's short story, The Body) you'll love this atmospheric paranormal thriller.It's about time a new horror writer came on the scene who can give some of the old boy horror network a run for their money. Look out Stephen King, there just may be a new king on the rise!
